Abstract
Synopsis: The Cuttie's Hillock Sandstone is of non–marine origin and caps hills of Upper Old Red Sandstone. It is thus stratigraphically isolated and has to be dated by comparing its fossil reptiles with allied forms from Permo–Triassic sequences elsewhere, particularly Russia and South Africa, on the bases of presumed phylogeny and degree of specialization. Its age lies within the range late Permian to early Triassic, the evidence tending to favour the latter alternative, that is, equivalent to a position low in the Lystrosaurus Zone of South Africa. Keywords
