Abstract
The problems inherent in the AMA physician manpower data base are illustrated by a cohort study of physicians immigrating to the United States between 1961 and 1971. An estimated 33 per cent of the 27,710 immigrants in the cohort were not on the 1971 AMA physician file. The results of this study and consideration of other problems with the AMA data point to the need for a new data base which will include all physicians working in the U.S. We would suggest that this data base be maintained by State Licensure Boards and integrated at the federal level by the National Center for Health Statistics. Keywords
