Abstract
Disc pressures were measured in the third lumbar disc whilst sitting down on a chair and rising. Three methods of rising and sitting down were studied; unsupported, using thigh support and using armrest support. Pressure increases always occurred. The use of arm support was found to reduce significantly the maximum pressure measured, and the armrests were particularly effective for that purpose. Keywords
