Abstract
Intra-articular fractures in the knee and fracture-dislocations of the shoulder can produce an accumulation of blood and fat in these joints. This may be visible on X-ray films taken with a horizontal ray since the fat gives a translucency superiorly with a "level" at its interface with the blood beneath. The probable mechanisms and significance of this appearance are discussed. Keywords
