Abstract
The report includes observations on the effect of pituitary growth hormone prepns. in 8 individuals including 3 normal adult males, 1 patient with panhypopituitarism, 2 with retinitis pigmentosa, 1 with rheumatoid arthritis, and 1 with spontaneously occurring myxedema. These studies extended over the period of 1948-1953. A positive protein anabolic effect was obtained only in patients with myxedema. It is believed that the lack of growth hormone effect in the other patients is probably referable to at least 2 factors, contamination with thyrotropin, and the presence of significant amts. of denatured protein which completely masked any growth hormone effect. Keywords
