LXX Studies on the Physiology of the Trachea

Abstract
The trachea differs functionally from the esophagus and the gastro-intestinal tract and reacts with a momentary relaxation and contraction simultaneously on all levels not with a propulsion wave. The tracheal muscle action is more involved in supporting respiratory mechanics than in excreting the tracheobronchial tree secretions. The muscle activity contains small rhythmic contractions with a frequency of 7 cycles/2-4 sec as well as large waves of tonus change with a frequency of 7 cycles/3-5 min. No conventional action potentials, but always local fluctuations, in the membrane potential were demonstrated in in vitro experiments.
