Abstract
IngestionThe normal consequence of recognition is the initiation of engulfment by the phagocyte. To be considered are the mechanisms by which ingestion occurs and how recognition incites the engulfment process.Mechanisms of IngestionEarly observers of ingestion by phagocytes noticed its similarity to the migration of these cells.83 Upon particle contact, the hyaline ectoplasm extends to form pseudopodia, and, if migration toward the particle preceded contact, the lamellipodium simply surrounds the particle (Fig. 3). The movement of the pseudopodia is a spreading one and is similar to the spreading of phagocytes on surfaces. The pseudopodia fuse at the distal . . .Keywords
