Abstract
Ever since its discovery at the end of the last century, the stratosphere has aroused much interest, not only among meteorologists, but among other men of science also. While at first its cause seemed so mysterious that many doubted the reality of its existence, it is now generally agreed that the change from troposphere to stratosphere corresponds to a change from convection to radiation as the main factor governing the temperature of the air. It will be the purpose of this lecture to try to present a picture of the conditions at these high levels in the atmosphere as they are known to-day.
