Abstract
To the Editor: The elevation of fetal hemoglobin in infants with the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) reported by Giulian et al. (April 30 issue)1 is surprising because it seems so consistent and dramatic, yet it is difficult to explain as either a primary or a secondary abnormality in these infants. The possibility that a delayed switch from fetal to adult hemoglobin may be a primary basis for vulnerability to SIDS seems unlikely. As discussed by the authors, although fetal hemoglobin is known to have a higher oxygen affinity, the magnitude of differences in the proportions of fetal hemoglobin in . . .Keywords
