Abstract
A transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the adhesion properties of fine gold particles (typical radius 20–30 nm). The adhesion process is found to be intimately related to the crystallography of the particles and consists both of an elastic part and a plastic part, where twinning plays an important role. The main driving force in adhesion is due to the surface energy, but electrostatic forces might also be of importance. Keywords
