Cytogenetic Diagnosis of Meningeal Carcinomatosis

Abstract
To the Editor: We would like to call attention to karyotype analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as a helpful supplement to conventional cytologic analysis in the diagnosis of meningeal carcinomatosis.A 52-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital; she had had tiredness, headache, burping, and slight speech disturbance for two weeks. Neurologic examination revealed cervical rigidity; the temperature was 37.6°C. The CSF contained 608 red cells, 68 lymphocytes per cubic millimeter, 2.2 g of protein per liter, and 0.7 mmol of glucose per liter. The serum glucose was 5.5 mmol per liter.
