Possible Mechanism of Urea Toxicity in Ruminants.

Abstract
Intravenous injection with 6 g, oral administration with 25 g or abdominal injection with 20 g of ammonium carbamate proved fatal to ruminating lambs. The toxicity produced was very similar to acute urea toxicity in ruminants. It is proposed that acute urea toxicity in ruminants is not due to ammonia per se but to ammonium carbamate as conditions exist in the rumen after the oral administration of urea which would lead to the formation of ammonium carbamate.
