Metabolism of ß-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate by excised rat diaphragm and diaphragm homogenate

Abstract
The oxidation of labeled ß-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate to C14O2 by rat diaphragm and diaphragm homogenate was studied. Added ß-hydroxybutyrate participates extensively in the CO2 production and acetoacetate to an even greater extent. Contrary to previous studies in which added glucose depressed the oxidation of labeled butyrate, added glucose slightly augmented the oxidation of labeled ß-hydroxybutyrate. Experiments designed to elucidate the mechanism of this glucose action failed to implicate any specific metabolic sequence.
