Abstract
Nearly 10 years ago I called attention to the rapid increase in the number of women entering U.S. medical schools and speculated on the changes in the medical profession that might ensue if this trend were to continue.1 Since then, the increase in the number of women medical students has continued,2 but it is now clear that this change is occurring against a background of declining numbers of white male applicants. We seem to be witnessing the beginnings of a demographic revolution of major proportions, which is bound to have great importance for the future of our health care system. . . .
