Abstract
Many higher education systems are staffed by an ageing teaching force, and the implications for quality in the present and the medium term have been insufficiently appreciated. A study of 20 midlife teaching staff in one Canadian university suggests that, while this can be a time of stagnation, it can also be the time of a second call to commit to working in higher education. However, if that possibility is to be realised, there are implications for the ways in which higher education institutions operate. Keywords
