Abstract
To the Editor: The clinical diagnosis of thrombophlebitis involving the deep veins of the leg is imprecise, and synovial cysts have been reported to mimic thrombophlebitis. A recent case emphasizes the difficulties with this differential diagnosis.A 52-year-old man on a long automobile trip gave a two-day history of progressive swelling, pain and discoloration in the right calf. There was a history of recurrent pain and swelling in the right knee for years. An inflamed, swollen and ecchymotic right calf was present on examination.
