THIRD DIVISION SEGREGATION FOR BISEXUALITY AT THE MATING-TYPE LOCUS OFNEUROSPORAAND ITS GENETIC IMPLICATIONS

Abstract
The results of matings between a bisexual strain of Neurospora crassa and standard mating-type tester strains are presented. Tetrad analysis of these crosses indicated that occasional 3rd-division types of asci occur, showing segregation for the mating-types A/a, A and a in a ratio 1:3:4. In addition, the bisexual strain exhibits somatic segregation in conidia for 4 mating-type reactions: A/a, A, and a and neutral. An extension of the polaron hybrid DNA theory (Whitehouse) was proposed as an explanation of the mechanism underlying somatic recombination in the vegetative part of the fungus.
