Abstract
The photodissociation spectra of the parent ions arising from both cis and trans isomers of 1,3,5-hexatriene are identical within 10 ms of formation. It appears that both ions have a common structure soon after electron impact ionization. The rate of collisional quenching of vibrationally excited ions has been measured using a pulsed ion cyclotron resonance (icr)-pulsed dye laser technique. Quenching occurs with nearly unit efficiency in collisions with the parent neutral. Approximately fifty collisions with argon are required to relax the vibrational excitation in the excited ions. Keywords
