Abstract
Various factors influencing the incidence of anencephaly are discussed. The relationship between anencephaly and spina bifida is pointed out. On the basis of calculated empiric risk figures, principles of genetic counseling in these conditions are outlined. Preventive measures, applicable to cases with special risk, are proposed. Keywords
