Discriminant Analysis

Abstract
Discriminant function analysis is a technique which allows the researcher to examine and describe simultaneously the differences between two or more mutually exclusive groups with respect to several continuous variables. Although numerous studies are reported in the literature in which discriminant analysis would have been appropriate, the technique is seldom used in leisure and recreation research. This paper reviews the nature, scope and use of discriminant analysis. The topics covered include a description of discriminant analysis, its relevance to leisure research, data requirements of discriminant analysis, evaluating discriminant analysis results and uses of discriminant analysis. In order to clarify the concepts discussed, an example is introduced early in the paper and each concept is illustrated in the context of this example.
