Abstract
Populations of D. melanogaster and D. funebris have coexisted for almost 2 years in population bottles. Most of the direct competition occurred between the larvae. Survival of both spp. can be attributed to fluctuations in the environment. Fresh yeasted medium was more favorable to development of D. melanogaster larvae; as the food aged, it was more suitable for the growth of D. funebris larvae. Survival of both spp. does not constitute an exception to the mathematical theories of competition of Lotka and Volterra.
