Abstract
Encephalomalacia in chicks developed on a diet containing a calculated 11 mg of vitamin E per kg of diet. Wheat germ oil and alpha tocopherol were added to the diet without effect. Later in a 5-group comparison using 800 to 960 chicks per group deaths from encephalomalacia occurred in groups fed supplements of 11, 22, 33 and no added vitamin E per kg diet. Mortality ranged from 6% to 28% without appreciable benefit from the supplements. In a later series use of butylated hydroxy-toluene per ton of diet did not prevent the disorder. Crowding, mixed ages, incidence of coccidiosis, bred and type of house or housing and possibily other stress factors were involved in incidence of the disorder. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
