Immunochemical Analysis of Staphylococcal Antigenic Preparations

Abstract
Purified antigenic fractions (A-1, A-2, A-3, B and C) from a Staphylococcus aureus strain were analyzed by immune precipitation in gel. A-l contained antigen-A and A-3 polysaccharide-A. Whether A-2, B and C are related to some defined staphylococcal antigens is not known. Fraction A-l is composed of alanine, aspartic-acid, glutamic-acid, glycine, leucine (or isoleucine) and lysin (89% of the dry weight). There is in addition 1[long dash]3% hexoses, but no hexosamines, including muramic-acid or P. A-l was sensitive to tryptic digestion but not to periodic-acid oxidation. Fractions A-2, A-3, B and C may all contain muramic-acid but otherwise differ considerably in chemical composition.
