Abstract
Self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations are presented for a variety of heterogeneous systems consisting of one-dimensional arrays of itinerant paramagnets, ferromagnets, and antiferromagnets. Several aspects of the multilayers and interfaces are explored: enhancement and reduction of the local magnetic moments, magnetic coupling at the interfaces, magnetic arrangements within each film and among nonneighboring films, the global symmetry of the systems, frustration, orientation of the various moments with respect to an outside applied field, and magnetic-field-induced transitions. The various situations exhibit a rich structure and a wealth of possible magnetic effects. Keywords
