Abstract
A concept of density based on the crown width/height relationship is proposed. For a tree of specified height, the point density measure is defined as the ratio of the area required by a tree growing free of aerial competition, to the area available when growing under competitive conditions. Using this definition, the derivation of an area–density measure is described and its relationship to the 'height–stocking concept' of Wilson, and Krajicek's 'crown competition factor' is discussed. Keywords
