Abstract
It is shown that the commutative magnetic translational symmetry of the effective Hamiltonian for a Bloch electron in a magnetic field is, in a well-defined sense, a subgroup of the translation group for zero magnetic field. Based on this group-subgroup relationship a proof is presented for the splitting of an energy band into N magnetic subbands in the framework of the effective Hamiltonian approximation. Keywords
