Diaspirins that crosslink .beta. chains of hemoglobin: bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl) succinate and bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl) fumarate

Abstract
Two double-headed aspirins, bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl) succinate and bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl) fumarate, were potent acylating agents of intracellular [human] Hb (A or S) in vitro. These reagents cross-linked .beta. chains of Hb, probably at the .beta. cleft. The modified Hb showed increased O2 affinities and reduced gelation or sickling tendencies.
