Business organization, segmentation and location

Abstract
Taylor M. and Thrift N. (1983) Business organization, segmentation and location, Reg. Studies 17, 445–465. This paper is intended to provide a coherent theoretical framework for industrial geography, industrial economics and organization theory based on the notion of the segmentation of business organizations. The literature on dualism and segmentation of business organizations is reviewed and found wanting. An alternative process-oriented account of segmentation of the business organization is presented which can account for the structural variations in present-day developed economies. The geographical implications of the framework are brought out.
