Manganese Deficiency in the Bovine

Abstract
Eight Hereford cows, two fed a control ration and six a low manganese ration, were used in this study. Cattle had been on comparable rations a year prior to this test. The control cows and their calves were normal. Each of the six calves from the low manganese fed cows exhibited neonatal deformities. The deformed calves exhibited reduced breaking strength and length of the humerus, reduced serum alkaline phosphatase levels and lower manganese level in bones, liver, kidney, blood, and gonads. Data from this experiment indicate that the bovine requires manganese in higher amounts than heretofore believed or that ingestion of compounds antagonistic to manganese utilization is prevalent in many areas. Data from this test show that the gestating cow's requirement for manganese is in excess of 16 ppm.
