Abstract
Adult rapists are a highly heterogeneous and poorly understood population. The present study investigated the occurrence of homogeneous rapist sub-groups that could be differentiated on the basis of the MMPI. One hundred twenty-three adult criminal sex offenders were subjects in this study. Results of a hierarchical clustering procedure suggested the occurrence of five distinct MMPI profile types. A cross-validation procedure utilizing cross-classification rules across data sets indicated these five groups replicated those identified in previous research. In addition, psychosocial and sexological variables independent of the MMPI which differentiate the groups were also replicated. The profile subtypes are discussed in the context of clinical descriptions of rapists. Directions are offered for future research. Keywords
