Abstract
The existence of an interchange instability strictly associated with electron inertia is demonstrated. This is characterized by a growth rate significantly larger than the usual ioninertial Rayleigh-Taylor rate and by self-generated magnetic fields localized around the accelerating plasma surface. This novel instability may be partially responsible for the observed magnetic fields in ablatively accelerated laser plasmas. Keywords
