Abstract
The alternating and impulse-voltage breakdown of a composite consisting of a column of air in series with a solid dielectric layer has been investigated. Breakdown is initiated in the solid some 60 ns before voltage collapse, and not by the establishment of a plasma throughout the air column, as supposed by a current hypothesis. This is also true for a liquid/solid composite. Keywords
