Root Pain and Paraplegia Due to Protrusions of Thoracic Intervertebral Disks

Abstract
Protrusion of an intervertebral disc into the vertebral canal is well recognized in the cervical and especially the lumbar regions of the vertebral column. The authors draw attention to 17 cases, occurring at the Mayo Clinic between 1922 and 1948, in which the protruded disc was situated in the thoracic region. The ratio of protruded thoracic discs was about 2 or 3 to 1000 in the lumbar and cervical regions combined.
