Abstract
The recently proposed functional of Takatsuka and McKoy, derived from the Schwinger-type Newton functional, is shown to follow from the usual Hulthén-Kohn variational principle. A generalization of their method becomes obvious in this approach and its better convergence is demonstrated on a simple example. Keywords
