Abstract
The many methods of analysis, which may be used in the detection of impurities in solid lubricants, can generally be classified as either quantitative or qualitative. Because of the limitations inherent in each, both quantitative and qualitative methods are usually necessary to determine the type and relative amounts of impurities in any sample. The technique which the authors have found most useful is a combined analysis of the complementary thermo-gravimetric and X-ray diffraction data. Other methods which have been useful in special cases include X-ray emission and quantitative chemical analysis. Examples are given of the impurity detection in several different lubricant samples. Keywords
