Abstract
Students in a first year engineering materials class were asked to mark exam scripts—their own and a colleagues’. It was thought that they might learn more about the subject matter by doing so and that their own examination-taking skills might be improved by the experience. The scripts were also marked by teachers and the various assessments are compared. A questionnaire was issued to find out how students reacted to the experience. Copies of the examination paper, the presentation of model solutions, marking sheets and the questionnaire are included.
