Abstract
The number of edible snails is decreasing in France and in Europe, and it is now necessary to develop snail raising or heliciculture. A production program involving the Petit-gris snail (H. aspersa Mueller) was started at the National Institute for Agricultural Research heliciculture center of Magnerand, near La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime). All results from the 1st phase of snail raising, i.e., reproduction and hatching of juveniles in heated houses (20.degree. C) with controlled hygrometry, are given. Development of a heliciculture will have 3 consequences: supply of a type of food of nonnegligible economic interest; prevent a reduction or disappearance of natural stocks; and repopulate regions where the species has disappeared for reestablishing the initial trophic system.
