Phase Relationships in CaS ‐ Rare Earth Sulfide Systems

Abstract
Phase relationships in the , , , and systems have been determined between 800° and 1200°C at . All four dopants show significant solid solubility in (15–30 m/o at 1200°C). Approximate ratios required to avoid oxygen contamination of the mixed sulfides are derived. Variation of the lattice parameter of the phase with dopant content indicates an increase in size of the dopant ion upon dissolution. The x‐ray diffraction pattern of monoclinic has been determined. The β‐phase may be regarded as a slight distortion of the orthorhombic low temperature α phase.
