X. Rangitikei district

Abstract
Pasture growth rates are presented for two locations in the Rangitikei district North Island. One trial was at Flock House, south-west of Bulls, and two trials conducted at different times were at Marton. In the first Marton trial, pasture was alternately grazed, then spelled and cut with a mower. Harvests were obtained at 14-day intervals over 12 years. In the Flock House trial and second Marton trial, yields were obtained over 6 and 11 years respectively, from grazed pastures cut by a standardised method at regular intervals using movable cages. The mean yield and standard error of individual samples over all years of measurement are given for standard dates at 14-day intervals. For all trials 12% of the annual growth was produced during the winter months of June, July, and August, 38% was produced in spring, 28% in summer, and 22% in autumn. At Flock House the growth pattern of grasses was similar to that of the entire sward. White clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (T. pratense) growth rates were low, with a spring peak. In the second Marton trial, perennial ryegrass had a small spring peak and a slight increase in autumn, and white clover had a summer peak. Climate data, rainfall, and temperature during the pasture measurement periods are given for each site.
