Inhibition of Nitrification in Bladen Grassland Soil

Abstract
Low nitrification in Bladen grassland soil was not improved by extraction of possible toxic substances. Liming improved nitrification after a delay period. Addition of nitrifiers to a limed soil resulted in good nitrification. Nitrifiers developed in Bladen soil gave better nitrification in Bladen than nitrifiers from Cecil. The acid Bladen soils were very high in extractable aluminum. It was concluded that acidity and the resulting low population of nitrifiers was the cause of low nitrification in Bladen sod soil.
