Abstract
The electric field gradient at the Al site in corundum has been estimated considering the Al- complex embedded in . The complete metal-ion-ligand overlaps have been taken into account. Our results in conjunction with the observed quadrupole coupling constant yield the value 0.148 b for the quadrupole moment of , which is in very good agreement with the experimental value 0.149 b.
