Study of the Kinetics of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Phosphate‐Bonded Composite Nickel Electrodes by the Open‐Circuit Potential Decay Method

Abstract
The hydrogen evolution reaction on phosphate‐bonded nickel electrodes is investigated in at 25°C by the open‐circuit potential decay method to evaluate the kinetics of reactions. It was found that the HER proceeds via the Volmer‐Heyrovsky mechanism. The good performance of the electrode is attributed to its high surface area and the greater intrinsic activity of spiky filamentary nickel as compared to smooth nickel. Electrochemical oxidation of the phosphate‐bonded nickel electrode carried out at 1530 mV/RHE causes changes in the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction.
