Abstract
Widely adopted while prospective validation was still under way, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is now a clinically established treatment for reversing neonatal respiratory failure. The technique's accomplishments are impressive—83% survival in conditions otherwise associated with 80% mortality—but its problems include significant handicap in 20% of treated survivors. Keywords
