The Production and Study of an Acute Nicotinic Acid Deficiency in the Calf

Abstract
Using a low-tryptophan diet, we have produced and described a nicotinic acid deficiency in the young calf. Symptoms exhibited by the 4 deficient animals were a loss of appetite, severe scouring, dehydration, weakness and sudden death by the second or third day on the deficient diet. There is a marked and rapid improvement in deficient animals following administration of nicotinic acid.
