Acute Transient Gastrointestinal Protein Loss

Abstract
A 6-year-old boy developed transient, generalized edema and hypoproteinemia following an episode of acute gastroenteritis. These were associated with peripheral and bone marrow eosinophilia, with increased fecal excretion of chromium-labeled albumin, and with abnormally enlarged gastric musocal folds. Spontaneous recovery began at 1 week with diminution of the edema and increment in the serum protein. By 6 weeks minimal hypoproteinemia and an abnormal gastric biopsy with changes suggestive of Menetrier's disease were apparent. Serum proteins were normal 3 months after the acute onset of this illness.
