Abstract
This paper is to set out guidelines about families who may or may not be suitable to adopt children, as seen from the point of view of a child and family psychiatrist whose service is required to assess and intervene with adoptive families in various degrees of distress, malfunction, disruption and disintegration. These guidelines are at the level of those family functions which provide an environment conducive to mental and physical health and adequate personality growth.
