Abstract
Transection of the spinal cord of normal adult monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Cercocebus fuliginosus) in the earlier half of the cycle precipitates uterine bleeding. The same operation did not induce this effect in castrate monkeys (3 cases), nor did it do so when performed on an immature monkey. These negative expts. therefore suggest that uterine bleeding follows transection only when the uterus is under ovarian influence. An experiment was therefore planned to discover whether the bleeding follows cord section primarily as an effect of the operation upon an oestrin-sensitised uterus, or secondarily as a result of a drop in the oestrin level following a change occurring in the ovaries after transection. Transection of the cord of 2 castrate monkeys receiving theelin injections did not induce the bleeding. It may consequently be supposed that the second of these hypotheses is closer to the truth. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
