Abstract
This chapter offers a brief exploration of the terrain of postmodern social theory as it relates to that branch of analysis concerned with organizations. In so doing, it contrasts modern and postmodern forms of explanation and examines a range of concepts derived from these two generic approaches. Initially, I assess some of the chief theoretical positions of modernism and review different approaches to the modernist trajectory in organizational analysis. Subsequently, through reference to the works of key writers, I explore a range of postmodern concepts in social theory and trace how they have been used as tools in organization theory.
