Abstract
Because efforts to use the cutaneous sense for conveying speech and visual information have met with only partial success, it would be useful to understand better the pattern-sensing capabilities of touch. This paper is an account of the sensory and perceptual factors known or hypothesized to limit the tactile perception of simple two-dimensional patterns, with special attention to the limited spatial bandwidth of touch. Keywords
