Abstract
Genesis of breath sounds from the trachea, main bronchi and upper respiratory tract in normal subjects and patients with respiratory diseases are reviewed. Generation of vesicular sounds in cases of chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, pneumothorax and pleural effusion are compared to normal bronchial sounds. 133Xe scintillation scans and inhalation of a bronchodilating aerosol are suggested for diagnosis of respiratory diseases presenting with abnormal breath sounds.
